It’s hard to believe that November is already here. It seems like the end of the year flies by. Soon it will be Thanksgiving and the holiday season. This month we are highlighting our appreciation of veterans here at Heidi Ella Massage and Wellness.

Special of the Month

We will be offering a free 30 minute massage to veterans during the month of November. You can use this as a stand-alone or upgrade to a 60, 90 or 120 minute session. We truly appreciate all that you do for this country. You can book online or call to make an appointment.

Veteran’s Day of Wellness

In honor of Veterans Day, we would like to show our appreciation to all the men and women who have bravely served our country.  If you, or someone you know, are dealing with the physical and/or emotional challenges of a past deployment, we would love to provide you the opportunity to join us for a special Veterans Day of Wellness.  This mini-retreat will offer a well deserved Veteran a chance to enjoy the benefits of yoga, acupuncture, and a customized massage or bodywork treatment specialized to address your specific concerns.  They will also gain practical tools to handle stress and pain on a day to day basis more effectively.  In addition, light food and drinks will be provided.

A holistic approach including massage, acupuncture and yoga has been proven to:

  • Relieve Pain                                                 
  • Regain Natural Movement

Prenatal Yoga

There is still space available in the Saturday afternoon class. This Yoga series will be devoted to learning asana (postures) and pranayama (breathing) to prepare for childbirth. We will use gentle and restorative yoga and breathing exercises to strengthen body and mind in anticipation of labor.  Part Yoga, part childbirth education, this class will see you challenged in the second trimester and supported in through your third.

You will need to bring your own mat to class, but all other props will be provided. The class size is small and questions/discussion is encouraged. The class is held at 1:30pm-2:30pm on Saturdays. Check out the website for more information.

Yoga and Acupressure for Labor Workshop

  • November 5, 2016
  • 3:00-4:30pm
  • $110.00 per couple

In this partners class, you will have an opportunity to learn how yoga, acupressure and essential oils can help to maintain your well-being during labor. It is a fun and interactive class that gives you tools for early and active labor. You will need to wear loose fitting clothes you can move in. One yoga mat per couple will work. You will also receive a special “labor blend” of essential oils to bring with you to your birth setting. Call The Wellness Center (703-323-1563) for more information or to sign up. Essential Oil of the Month: Melaleuca

Melaleuca, or tea tree oil, is an essential oil from Australia. It can be used for cleansing the skin, purifying the air and helping support the immune system. You can be add it to witch hazel and aloe vera gel to create a soothing facial toner. Melaleuca can also be applied directly to the skin in small amounts to help with blemishes. This oil’s anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties make it the ideal essential oil to support the skin.

Recipe of the Month: Roasted Garlic Gazpacho with Roasted Pistachio Garnish

Let’s face it; it is HOT outside. A recipe that doesn’t require heating up the whole kitchen and slaving over the stove is a blessing in this weather. Gazpacho is an excellent way to get fresh, wholesome nutrition without sacrificing taste. It is easy to prepare and can be eaten with a protein (adding grilled shrimp…yum!) or a salad for a light and healthful meal. The roasted garlic adds a minimal amount of extra work (largely unattended), but it adds layers of deep and delicious flavor.

  • 5 Medium Tomatoes (cored and chopped)
  • 1 Medium Cucumber (peeled, seeded and chopped)
  • 2 Ripe Avocados (peeled, pitted and cubed)
  • 4 tbsp Fresh Lime Juice
  • 4 Cloves of Roasted Garlic (excellent tutorial here)
  • 1 1/2 tsp  ground cumin
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • chopped cilantro and/or parsley as garnish (about a handful)
  • 1c Roasted or Raw Pistachios (chopped for garnish)

Once the ingredients (minus the garnish) have been chopped/prepared, place them in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Transfer the soup to an air-tight container and chill. Serve with cilantro/parsley and pistachio garnish. (Toast the pistachios right before serving in a pan over low heat until you smell a nutty fragrance from the nuts. Chop and use as garnish.) You can always add your favorite hot sauce if your would like a little bit of heat.

The garlic, avocado, pistachio and cilantro/parsley all provide benefits to the respiratory and cardiovascular system and offer added antioxidant benefits. You are also providing vital potassium to your body with the tomatoes and avocados. The whole soup offers an excellent source of hydration in the heat without washing away nutrients. All that and it is delicious, too. Enjoy!

New at The Wellness Center in July

Heidi Ella Wellness and Massage is part of The Wellness Center in Burke, VA. The Wellness Center offering massage, acupuncture, yoga, Pilates, nutrition and educational workshops. During the month of July, there are several great offerings from yoga, massage and nutrition.

The Afternoon of Wellness: Beauty From the Inside Out

In this workshop you will get an interactive demonstration of using nutritional wellness to create “beauty from the inside out”. Nutritionist Elizabeth Owens will offer helpful tips on eating healthful foods and creating easy, nutritious meals that will further you on your path to wellness.

Next, Heidi Vivieros will lead you through making your own natural skincare products. By the end you will have made your own facial cleanser, toner and moisturizer that you can bring home for your own use.

Lastly you will receive a 30 minute facial massage using all natural products to leave you with a healthy, beautiful glow.

Kick Your Cravings Workshop

Do you constantly feel hungry and never satisfied? Do you find yourself snacking throughout the day, and often at night before bed? Do you crave sugar? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, it is time to kick your cravings and balance your blood sugar! Your body and mind will thank you! This class will explain what to eat and what to avoid so you can get through the day without constantly thinking about food, while feeling satisfied and nourished. The dietary changes learned in this class can improve your energy, mental clarity, mood, and those cravings!

Beginners Hatha Yoga

Tuesday Evenings at 6:00pm-7:00pm (Janet Brown)

Thursday Afternoons at 12:00pm-1:00pm (Alicia Cross)

While not a new class, there are new instructors leading the beginners hatha yoga classes at The Wellness Center. Our beloved Jen Hartmann is moving, so her classes have been taken over by Janet Brown and Alicia Cross. If you are new to yoga or just need a refresher, be sure to check out this class. Your instructors will guide you through safe and gentle poses while introducing you to hatha yoga. Our Summer Quarter has begun, but there is still time to register for classes.

Recipe of the Month: Tea-rubbed Salmon with Brown Rice and Curried Greens

Serves 4


  • 4 4oz pieces of Wild Alaskan Salmon (not Atlantic)
  • 1tsp loose green tea
  • 1tsp sea salt
  • 1/2tsp lavender flowers
  • 1/2tsp black pepper
  • olive oil


  • 1c Brown Rice (uncooked)
  • 2c water

Curried Greens

  • 2c kale or chard
  • 2tbsp coconut oil
  • 2tsp curry powder
  • 2tbsp coconut milk (full fat)
  • sea salt and pepper to taste

Begin by preparing the rice. Place rice and water in pot and allow to simmer for 40 mins. Prepare the rub for the salmon by grinding the tea, salt, pepper and lavender in a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. Rub one side of the salmon and set aside at room temperature. At about 25 mins left on the timer, melt coconut oil in large shallow pan. Add the salt, pepper and curry powder and stir. Once the curry powder is fragrant, add the greens. Allow them to become soft and turn the heat down to low. Stir occasionally, adding the coconut milk in the last ten minutes of cooking. Now place about 1 tbsp of olive oil in a sautee pan. Once the oil is hot, add the salmon to the pan (rub side down). Allow the salmon to cook on each side for 10 minutes. Plate and enjoy!
